PHILOSOPHY:  My main objective in my Physical Education classes is to get everyone involved and excited about one or more aspects of class.  I am a big believer in having a wide variety of activities to do throughout the quarter.  This way my students are being exposed to activities that they might enjoy and pursue.  Not every student is going to enjoy playing the traditional sports such as basketball and volleyball.  That is why I will also offer and expose my students to such things as ultimate frisbee, soccer and foot bags.  By doing this I may be able to reach certain students that I would have not reached by doing the traditional P.E. activities.  These students are usually the kids that are not involved in after school activities and do need the exercise.  This is a great way to get them involved in a fun activity that also benefits them health wise.  I have used this strategy out at my observation school.  We were doing a basketball unit and I came up with an alternative type game called basketball golf.  This was a great activity where my students enjoyed competing against themselves to try and better their scores.  Even the students that did not enjoy the typical basketball lessons enjoyed this.  It was great to see and made me feel good about doing this kind of activity.  I also mentioned doing a foot bag lesson that got students from other classes coming up and talking to me about it.  These are students that do not normally like P.E., but they were very interested and excited on the idea and asked me if I needed any help or ideas for the lesson.  That is what makes me want to become a great teacher so I can impact students lives in a positive way.

I believe that there is a clear distinction between classroom management and discipline.  By no means are they the same but I believe with out one you can not have the other.  By having a good management plan you can eliminate discipline problems.  Students need to be put in a system right from the beginning where they understand what is acceptable and what is not.  When your students understand this they know that if they do not abide by the rules they will suffer the consequences.  If you do not have a good management style you will have to be disciplining your students all the time because the rules and expectations have not been laid out.  A good management plan also puts your students in situations where it is hard for them to fail.  By keeping your students busy and on task students will not have time to mis-behave.  That is why I believe that a good management plan eleviates most discipline problems.  When I was at my school we had an incident where a student was mis-behaving.  I explained to him that he knew what he was supposed to be doing and his actions were unacceptable.  Then I explained what would happen if he continued acting this way or acted properly.  I made it very clear that the choice was his and it would be in his best interest to change his behavior.  He realized that he would be better off doing what was expected of him.  The choice was his and he made it.

My assessment strategies are very clear.  I expect my students to show up for class, dress down participate and take an occasional exam.  So for the most part if you dress down and participate on a daily basis you will receive a good grade.  The way I will assess this is by observing students on a daily basis for participation and attitude.  It is easy to see who is doing what they are supposed to and who isn't.  I will also let students know when they are not up to par so they have the choice to change their approach or not. The exams will touch on the basics of a particular activity.  This is a fair and easy way to assess my students and give them the grade they deserve.  This is the way my master teacher does it.  If the student comes to class, dresses down and participates they get an "A" for the day.  If they do not comply with all of this they get marked down accordingly.

My major philosophy is to get all my students excited and involved in my class.  I want to expose them to a wide variety of activities so they can find one they enjoy.  My classroom management style is to keep my students busy at all times to eleviate discipline problems.  My assessment strategies are simple and basic.  My main goal is to have a positive impact on getting my students to enjoy physical activities.
